Root Canal Therapy

WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL?

Root canal therapy is one of the most common procedures performed by an endodontist. Some general practice dentists will perform root canals as well. However, it is recommended to seek an endodontist for this kind of procedureDr. Rahim Karmali and the team at Lowry Endodontics have the training and specialized technology to give you a painless and predictable outcome.

If not done correctly, root canal therapy can result in pain, swelling, and the eventual loss of the tooth. This can result in additional procedures and expenses. It also adds to the amount of time you need to spend away from work at the dentist’s office. That is why it is so important to have a careful endodontist you trust performing your root canal.

When Is A Root Canal Necessary?

Inside every tooth, there is a soft tissue called the pulp. The pulp contains the nerves and the immune system of the tooth. It helps the tooth sense temperature and keeps it from becoming infected or developing an abscess. This pulp lives in canals that are within your root. This pulp can be damaged by cavities or trauma.

As this pulp dies, it can become extremely painful. Oftentimes, temperature sensitivity can develop and become severe. Eventually, the pulp will die and become infected.  The infection can erode your jaw bone and form an abscess. The tooth may also stain and discolor, leaving it black or brown. If left untreated, the infection can spread to the gums or sinuses. Essentially, it can lead to larger problems if left untreated. Root canal therapy prevents or cures infection and can also help return your tooth to its natural color.

What Is Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is very much as it sounds. The pulp canals within the root are gently cleaned, disinfected, and sealed. Done carefully, root canal therapy is absolutely painless.
